Gobi Grille Home

Our Story

Gobi Grille, Wichita’s newest Mongolian-style restaurant, serves neither Mongolian food nor BBQ! Although the stir-frying of meats on a large, open surface is supposed to evoke Mongolian cuisine, the preparation actually derives from Japanese-style teppanyaki. Mongolian barbecue is not actually Mongolian at all, and barbecue in Mongolia is prepared quite differently. Gobi Grille is the third Mongolian-style grill to open this year, but the only grill located on the West side of Wichita. Gobi Grille manager Brian Robinson says, "Gobi is the only non-chain of the three Wichita Mongolian grills (locally owned and independently operated)."

Gobi for the history:

The Gobi desert is one of the world’s great deserts (the largest desert region in Asia and the 5th largest desert in the world). It covers much of the southern part of Mongolia. Centuries ago in the province of Mongolia, the Mighty Khan’s hunting parties would camp on the banks of the great river Khan-Balik. After days devoted entirely to hunting, they would gather in droves to celebrate their successes. Communing in banquet-style pavilions, the Mongols would prepare slivers of meat and vegetables by slicing them with their razor sharp swords. They would then cook their food by searing it on their overturned shields that were heated by a blazing fire. The Kublai Khan and his fiercest warriors would sit high above the hordes, and enjoy the same food prepared for him on a large, roaring hot griddle.

Gobi for the hungry:

Gobi Grill is a fun place to eat – and creating your own stir-fry is easy! You’ll be greeted with a smile by the dedicated and friendly staff that is happy to walk first-time visitors through the Gobi dining experience. Once you're seated, they will take your beverage order (soft drinks, teas, and a wide variety of beer, wine and specialty cocktails). After that, it will be up to you to decide just what Mongolian cuisine, "Build Your Own Bowl," you’re hungry for. Instead of ordering from a menu, diners are given a metal bowl and invited to fill it to capacity and beyond at the buffet line filled with fresh vegetables (from ordinary to upscale) such as bell peppers, onion, broccoli, mushrooms, eggs, fajita mix, carrots, squash/zucchini, cabbage, pea pods, bean sprouts, potatoes, baby corn, jalapenos, celery, bamboo shoots, spinach, pineapple, cilantro, Mandarin oranges, garlic, tomatoes, green onions, Pico de Gallo, water chestnuts, green beans, tofu, butter, and much more; slivers of delicately sliced chicken, steak, beef, pork, Andouille sausage, and pepperoni; seafood such as shrimp, scallops, calamari and krab; and a wide selection of special spices and sauces: soy sauce, sweet & sour, marinara, lemon sauce, BBQ, ginger, Chile garlic, Gobi glaze, mushroom, fajita glaze, peanut sauce, and Burgundy wine. For the novice, Gobi has a nice wall of recipe cards that offer a variety of assembly suggestions. At the end of the line, diners chose a starch – white or fried rice, spiral pasta or tortillas. All that is left is to take your piled-high bowl to the large, circular grill, where you watch it prepared by a cast of colorful cooks. As you return to your table, you’ll find all the additional seasonings like salt, pepper, soy sauce and Asian-style hot sauces!
